FAQ

Got questions?

What this port is, which game files it uses, and what has actually been verified.

Can I play it yet?

There is no playable download yet. Maps and several gameplay systems run in development builds, but no mission has a verified start-to-finish playthrough. That is not a claim that every mission is impossible to finish; it means completion has not been demonstrated. Some mission logic is still missing.

Which version and platform are supported?

The current development target is Windows x64 and the PC version of Nightfire. The installer has been tested with nightfirepc.zip, version 5.9.1 with the community patch. Other sources, including original CD installations, are not supported by the installer yet. Linux, macOS and console versions are not verified targets.

You supply your own game data. Nightfire's maps, models, sounds and other retail assets are not distributed by this project. There is no public installer download yet.

Is this a remake or a mod?

It is an engine port, not a remake. Xash3D FWGS loads the original PC game's data, while a separate open-source game library reimplements its gameplay. The original game DLLs are not used. The aim is to preserve the levels, story and characters—not to recreate the console edition or promise new platform support.

Why does the game need a new engine at all?

Nightfire's PC release uses a heavily customised version of the engine behind Half-Life, along with its own file formats and closed-source game code. Working within those limits makes larger changes difficult. This project is exploring whether a maintained, open-source engine can take the game further.

How do you know what the original game did?

We look at what the maps use, what the community has already documented and what we can learn from the original game code. We write down what we find—and don't assume two similar- looking things work the same way.

How are your progress claims verified?

We distinguish checks of the game files from tests in the running engine and full playthroughs. Converting a model does not prove it renders correctly; loading a map on a dedicated server does not prove its visuals or mission logic work. New features may be built but still awaiting an in-game check. See the evidence and limitations on Progress.

Will multiplayer come back?

For now, the focus is the single-player campaign. Deathmatch and CTF maps load, but the multiplayer modes aren't part of the current work.

When will it be released?

There is no release date. A Windows installer has been tested locally, but that is not a public release or proof the campaign is ready. Full playthroughs and distribution/licence checks remain open.

How can I help or report an issue?

The engine, game library and menu changes are in public source repositories. Report reproducible issues in the relevant repository, with the map name, build or commit, steps to reproduce and what happened. Code contributions are welcome. Playtesting currently requires a development build and your own game data; there is no ready-to-play public package.

Is this official?

No. It is an unofficial fan project, not affiliated with or endorsed by the owners of the James Bond or Nightfire trademarks.
